HISTORY

Sovereignty Stories was founded in 2019 by Creative Decolonization, and Project Director Aaluk Edwardson. This project invited and inspired dozens of North Slope collaborators and organizational partners to join their call. During the first phase of SS, cultural workers created four artistic representations of ancient Iñuit stories: Qiñiqtuuraaq Atuun (Imagine Song), Nuyaqpalik Unipkaaq (Mermaid Legend), We Will Not Harbor The Monster (We Will Rise) And Alyssa’s Transformation.

Since then, through a decentralized power structure, and with input from many advisors, artists, cultural workers, local organizations, the ICAS tribal government, and other North Slope Iñuit community members, the program has grown, evolved, and transformed, now needing its own platform.

Through collective community dreaming, storytelling and artmaking we hope SS can build an even greater network of support and community via the production of virtual community events, podcasts, youth workshops, and so much more!

But we cannot do it without your voice and participation, if you are interested in collaborating with the SS project, please contact admin@silainuat.org for more information or to get involved!
